Review: HORSE The Band – Pizza EP

I love this EP. It was my first taste (lol, taste…) of HORSE The Band. My impression is that it doesn’t contain the strongest songs the band have to offer, but it’s still a great, catchy and fun record. HORSE The Band “invented” the “intendocore” thing, and any other band doing it are quite obviously nothing compared to the original. I ADORE the 8-bit sound, and it’s not a gimmick…it’s integral to the music. They are one of the few bands who keep it going throughout, rather than just having 8-bit interludes or segments with it in it, and I guess that just makes the whole thing extra-appealing.
ANYWAY, back to the record at hand. Ignoring the 8-bit element (and to be honest, I don’t like to do that), we have some pretty solid hardcore going on. I’m sure I’d enjoy it if that’s all it was, because it does stay interesting and beats most hardcore, but thinking of such things is silly…this IS nintendocore (though it’s tagged as hardcore on my computer anyway) and I’m sure it bugs lots of people, but hey, not me. I always feel hungry when I listen to this record…who’d have guessed, right? Humour-wise, my highlight is Werepizza and Crippled by Pizza. Song-wise, my highlight is Anti-Pizza (of course, Anti-Pizza is still funny too…they’re all funny). I don’t notice the lyrics as much as I should, but when I do I enjoy them.
Of course, it’s far from perfect. It’s fun and it’s exciting, but, well, as I said, not the band’s strongest release. I’m really not the biggest hardcore fan in the world, which is probably biasing me a little in my rating, but hey, 3.5 ain’t bad.
