Review: Delerium – The Best Of

I don’t particularly remember why I got myself a copy of this record. I think I listened to a few songs, figured it was sufferable and decided I’d get the whole thing.

I really should start out by saying that ambient music has never done a lot for me. I put this record on for the first time yesterday while I was trying to get some work done, because I figured it’d be good for “concentration” music (as Air is). Turns out I was a little wrong. It’s not really that ambient. Some is way more dancey than ambient. I guess the dancey stuff is the newer stuff. I’ve never been good for listening to music while working (or at least, working on something I have to think a decent amount about), so I had to turn it off.

Today I decided to listen to the record while doing nothing more than poking about the net. I could give it my full attention then anyway. I can’t say anything bad as such about it…but, while it is playing, I find myself being lulled off into a sleep.

Maybe that’s the intention. But it makes me think, what situation could I listen to this? In my car, maybe. Or maybe while having a bath. These are not the times I do most of my music listening however, so instantly I have a problem.

But to focus on the music: it is nice, yes. But that’s all it is. Some parts are also rather dull and typical of what bores me about a lot of dance music (repetitive rhythms with nothing going on for far too long…the end remix is URGH DULL).

Maybe I’ll find the record more relevant to my life one day. I’m sure I’ll listen to it again…well in the future. It’s definitely not bad…but it’s definitely not my kinda thing
