Review: Bad Religion – No Substance

So this seems to be the least liked BR album (aside from Into the Unknown, of course). Personally, it’s not my least liked…but it does lack the power of a lot of the other records. It isn’t even as ‘good’ as The Grey Race, which is obviously comparable to it since it also lacked the input of Gurewitz. No Substance doesn’t make me feel like a lot of the other records (including The Grey Race). I miss the emotions when listening to this record, but you know what? It’s still great.
I don’t think Bad Religion can put out a bad album. It’s catchy and really, the lyrics aren’t so bad either. I could listen to it over and over again and never sicken of it. It has plenty going for it, and even if it may not be up to the par of most of BR’s other records, it’s still much better than most modern punk rock out there. Definitely worth a listen, and if someone not into punk music approached me asking for recommendations, I might even recommend this to them, because of it’s more popish sound. It’s popish while still being obviously punk, and that’s really not a bad thing at all.
