The Gaslight Anthem
I heard about The Gaslight Anthem a year or so ago. I figured I’d check them out some day and put them down on my “to listen to” list. They were always mentioned in association with a number of punk bands I like, so I figured I’d enjoy them.
Months and months passed and I forgot about them, as I do with most of what I put on that list. I guess there’s no point in having the list if I don’t read it huh? Anyway, I eventually noticed them getting a decent amount of exposure in the media. It intrigued me. I had seem them described as punk rock, so the idea that such music could get such exposure in this day and age pushed me into finally checking them out.
Disappointed would be an understatement. As I listened, I became very confused. Was this the same band? I searched them out and read their comments on last.fm, and they were described as punk all over it, via their tags and their fans.
I youtubed them and I listened to a few songs on last.fm to make sure I did have the right band. Sure enough, same sound. I thought I was listening to The Killers at first. Punk rock? What on earth is with people? This is not punk rock! Punk rock does not sound like the killers! The Gaslight Anthem is indie, and it’s not the amazingly popular modern punk rock I had hoped for, but something people who obviously know nothing about music decide to classify.
Maybe their older stuff is punk rock (I wouldn’t know, I haven’t listened), but to still be put into the genre is crazy. If you only feel interested in mainstream music, do not let anyone tell you this is the state of modern punk music! This is not punk music!
