Folk Punk: Fun Stuff!
How’s your knowledge of folk-punk? Do you know it well? Do you even know what it is?
Fret not! You’ll know all about it within the next two minutes of your life.
Folk punk can be a bit of a spectrum, with some of it being slightly-louder-than-average folk with angry lyrics and some of it being punk with a bit of a twist. Either way, fans of one often enjoy the other.
The most well-known folk-Punk band is probably Against Me!, who are more on the “punk with a twist” side. Against Me!’s latest album is a little lacklustre on the folk-punk that made them famous, but they’ve got plenty of previous albums to keep anyone intrigued amused for a while. They’re political and they’re fun. Best of both worlds.
I’m not going to sit here and list you a whole load of folk punk music. The Pogues pioneered the genre in the ’80s. It’s never been a massively successful style, but celtic punk was spawned from it and a good number of American bands play it in a similar style to Against Me (although many are somewhat more folksy). Examples are Andrew Jackson Jihad, Defiance, Ohio and This Bike Is A Pipe Bomb.
