Muse: Negative Evolution?

Did you know Muse used to get compared to Radiohead? It’s true. I never saw much in the way of similarity (bar the vocals) myself, but it was somewhat more believable back in the day than it is now.

Muse’s first record was Showbiz. It wasn’t massively popular, but it did OK. Then came the record regarded by many fans as their best - Origin of Symmetry. They became a little more well known here, but weren’t exactly chart-toppers. Next was their breakthrough record: Absolution. It was adored by many. It was heavy (well, for chart music) and angry, but also beautiful too. After this we had a bit of a change of sound, when they released Black Holes and Revelations. It was different, but not so different that fans were enraged (though maybe a little pissy that they didn’t get another Origin of Symmetry/Absolution).

THEN came the killer. The Resistance. A complete change. Muse went pop. Totally pop. And also pretentious and boring. I have never made it through The Resistance and I doubt I ever will. It is about as dull as pretentious, try-hard rock music can be. It does start off well, I’ll give you that, and I almost fell for it…but then it deteriorates and tries way too hard to be a concept album and forgets about being enjoyable.
