Do you know your metal genres?
A lot of people just classify metal as, well, metal, and ignore the fact it’s probably one of the most diverse types of music out there. There are so many different types with different effects and tones and I do believe there’s a metal out there for everyone.
Some people might sometimes say “death metal” for anything heavy with screaming. I remember (and this is very embarrassing, FYI) when I was younger and A LOT more naive about metal than I am today, I called a From First To Last song on a Christmas CD I bought a “death metal” song. I cringe to say this now, since From First To Last is post-hardcore at best, but yeah, live and learn as they say.
So yeah, metal genres. You’ve not your generic metal that doesn’t really fit into anything else. A lot of the time this is just heavier than hard rock. Sometimes it is hard rock. It’s a continuum.
There’s metalcore, which is a fusion of metal and hardcore. Then there’s the death metal genres: brutal death metal, technical death metal, melodic death metal. There’s doom metal too, and alternative metal. Folk metal. Power metal. Thrash metal. Black metal. Glam metal. Goth metal. Progressive metal. Symphonic metal. …Well, the list can go on.
The point of this is, depth can come where you least expect it. You can find something you like in anything…you’ve just got to look.
