Post-Punk: An Overview
A lot of people class a lot of post-punk bands as just regular punk. The genre is obviously a bit of a continuum, so if you disagree with my definitions, don’t be overly pissed-off. The bands I’m gonna mention here are widely regarded as post-punk and they all have the definitive post-punk sound.
So to give you a tiny bit of history, the genre kinda started in the late ’70s, after the first wave of punk music. Post-punk was similar to punk, except it was less in-your-face and much more experimental (punk music has never exactly been known for being experimental). It was never exactly big in the mainstream, but some well known bands are often classed as post-punk (although it can be disputed), such as The Cure and Killing Joke. I see these as more new wave, but hey, genres are always argued about, aren’t they?
Anyway, some of the most well-known non-disputed bands of the genre are Gang Of Four, Wire and The Fall. Post-punk I believe is probably one of the genres a lot of people don’t get into because they don’t have the patience for it. It’s a grower. You listen at first and it doesn’t catch you, but once you listen again and again it really draws you in. That is my experience anyway. Some people claim certain indie bands such as The Strokes are part of a “post-punk revival” movement, but I disagree. Some post-punk bands are still going strong, the most famous of which is probably Sonic Youth.
