Know Your Punk Sub-Genres

When punk started, it was just pure punk…but as time moved on, people started improving and adding to it, and there days, although pure punk does still exist, we have so many different sub-genres as well. I’m gonna teach you a little about them here. You’ll possibly have heard of very few of them, but hey, that’s good; you’re learning something new.

Pop-Punk is the most obvious sub-genre. And I’m sure you can all think of examples (Blink 182, Sum 41 etc). Pop-Punk isn’t anything new and bands such as The Descendants kind of pioneered it.

Folk-punk covers band such as Against Me!, Andrew Jackson Jihad and Fake Problems. It can have quite a DIYish aesthetic and is often acoustic. Sometimes it’s very punk and you only hear a slight folksy influence in the rhythm, and sometimes it’s really just folk music but a little heavier.

Celtic-Punk. Awesome genre! Mostly American bands pretending to be Scottish/Irish, but that can be ignored. Often bagpipes are involves. It can be rather similar to folk-punk too. Examples of Celtic-punk bands are Dropkick Murphys, Flogging Molly and The Real McKenzies.

Hardcore Punk. Not really about so much these days, bands such as Agnostic Front and Minor threat are in the genre. Some earlier stuff by Bad Religion is sometimes dubbed hardcore punk, but I disagree. It’s the least accessible punk genre and I don’t generally enjoy it, but plenty of people are big fans.

Post-Punk isn’t really punk as such…but it is heavily influenced by punks. Minutemen, Wire and Mission Of Burma are examples of post-punk bands. It was at a peak in the ’80s, though it’s still around today. It has a very obvious and definitive sound, although to be honest it’s a little hard to describe.

Dance-punk…not punk at all! Indie with electronic elements pretty much. A good genre nevertheless, and one I’m sure I’ll post about in the future.
