Muse - Uprising

With the release of Muse’s next album, The Resistance, imminent for the 14th September in the UK and the 15th in the US (and earlier European releases) fans have been waiting eagerly to hear the first single. A week ahead of official release BBC Radio 1’s Zane Lowe was given a short 30 second clip of the new single, which left mouths around the country watering.

When we heard the official release of the first single Uprising it wasn’t too much of a surprise. If I am being honest I have been excited about other releases which have been left to the end of 2009 (namely 30 Seconds to Mars and Bon Jovi), as I had expected the same from Muse. When “the same”, though, is some of the most ambitious and convoluted rock music imaginable it is hard not to feel expectant, even when I try not to feel that way to avoid disappointment (am I a cynic? I don’t know).

But this song finds the band making signature music somewhere between 2006’s Black Holes and Revelations and 2001’s Origin of Symmetry. Full of their well known sound, established in 2001, and with the militaristic feel of their most recent album, this sounds just like something the band’s fans will want to hear. For the most inventive band in rock music, though, is this just the same after more of the same? We’ll have to wait and see…
