Taylor Swift Knows Shakespeare

My little sister knows Taylor Swift‘s songs by heart. It seems that she’s the new teen idol. The good thing is, and I hope I don’t jinx it, that she’s been on the spotlight for a while now and so far, no scandalous pictures of her doing drugs or having frisky affairs yet. So it seems that this new pop superstar is a genuinely good girl.
The 19-year-old country-pop singer’s most popular single to date is the lead track from the Fearless album, “Love Story.” The song is based on the story Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare. It’s said to be one of the most downloaded songs from iTunes. Meanwhile, Fearless debuted at no less than Number One on the US Billboard 200, and was the first album to sell one million copies in 2009.
Her other popular releases include “White Horse” and her latest, “You Belong With Me.” Her songs mostly tell of typical high school girls’ dreams and love stories – in “White Horse” she sings,
I’m not a princess, this ain’t a fairytale
I’m not the one you’ll sweep off her feet
Lead her up the stairwell
This ain’t Hollywood,
This is a small town
I was a dreamer before you went and let me down
Now its too late for you and your White Horse,
To come around.
The emotions conveyed in her songs seem very genuine – perhaps that’s why many teenaged girls have been able to relate to them and have made them part of their lives’ soundtrack.
